September 2006 Theme ~ "Something Old We Treasure"

Something Old Something New
Something Borrowed Something Blue

Something Old: A tattered old handkerchief I once held
Under the bouquet of roses and vine
Something my dear aunt gave me
I take it out of the cedar chest from time to time

Something New: A beautiful dress of white and lace
With buttons down the back and arms
How my dad trembled as he buttoned them
But he smiled with all his usual charm

Something Borrowed: Let's see what did I use?
Oh yes my mothers pearls of white
She used them on her special day
And I wore them with sheer delight

Something Blue: What did I use as something blue?
A garter of lace and blue ribbon I recall
Thirty-one years have come and gone
And I have loved them one and all

An antique tradition or memory to me
Has become a new tradition today
Whenever a loved one gets married
I hand my hankie away.

The Face of Time

Standing tall and majestic
In the old hallway at home
Holding the secrets in the mist from the yesterdays
long past
Keeping a silent rhythm
Never missing a second in time

The hours to come of all the tomorrows
Keeping time of the unknown of our future to be
But the keeper of time
With a gentle chime
Reminding us of time now in our past

A gentle face set in the color of gold
Where age is timeless
No matter how old
The hands of the hour
Moving though every day and every night

The never ending swing of the pendulum
The old Grandfathers Clock
Has been my friend
From my childhood to my time of now
A gift that I hold close from my families yesteryear

A Treasured Gift of Old

Aged and somewhat tattered
a faded memory
Coloured by the hands of time
this precious gift for me

Ears a bluish tinge now
eyes and nose are worn
The silent outline of his mouth
and a ribbon he once wore.

A confidant of sorts he was
with love for me bestowed
And everywhere that I went
this friend was sure to go

Thirty four this Christmas
but still he lives with me
A reminder of the precious love
my grandma had for me

For of all the things I treasure most
nothing can compare
To that very first Christmas gift
a cuddly teddy bear.

My Bear

A bear I got from someone who loves me
So sweet and soft and warm
Given from the heart and with lots of love
Twelve years ago as a special gift.

An Old Friend

Standing tall, glorious and strong,
Thickened and weathered with age,
Poised defiant, unflinching,
Enjoying the weather and seasons engaged.

Epitomes are drawn on its scars,
What history it's observed.
It sat witnessing for many years.
The War of eighteen-twelve, is a brawl it served.

From pine forests- wildlife - tee pees,
Log homes -automobiles - and,
A Big City, all were discerned
Or grew nearby, while solidly it did stand.

Luminous in the cold night sky,
Baking in the summers sun,
Beauty and age its bestowed,
Immortal shade provided for all and one.

What is cherished most that is old,
Not made of silver, or gold,
Is a splendid ancient tree.
That's graced this area, smiling silently.

Mama's Effanbee Doll

Born in 1959
Two years before my mom died
She made her Effanbee Doll mine
Lurene has a blue and white dress
Her blonde hair is a mess

Lurene has green eyes
This is no white lie
She is always in my sight
Lay her down she goes to sleep

Shhh don't make a peep
Mama gave her to me
For me to keep
I was told she was an antique

It was news to me
Mama is always here
In mama's Effanbee Doll
In my house she will always be

The Doily

Age turns what once was white to almost brown
Something this lovely you will not find in any town
The doily is a fragile reminder of a bygone age
Their lives were more than images on a family album page
The patterns intricate like the family lines
Each meeting of delicate threads a generation binds
Delicate and small, each knot ever so fine
Gives each generation in turn, a glimpse of another time

My Locket

Knowing how much I miss parts of my past,
I open my locket.
A bittersweet chapter of my life appears.
The memories and love are unlocked and free.
My heart is open, just like my locket.
Memories blanket me, enveloping my loneliness.
My love never falters, dies, or dwindles away,
Captured inside my locket.

My locket is like a book...
I open and close it on chapters of my life.
Understanding and believing the reality of here today,
Gone tomorrow.

Phantom Cat

I watch my Persian kitten
nudge her stuffed calico pal.
Purring, she finishes her Kit'n Kaboodle
then straddles it with her tiny hind legs.

She licks the soft Velboa fabric,
her eyes fixed on the polyester nape.
Then without so much as a glance back,
she lunges and bites..oh no!

With tail high and stiff against the wind,
she turns to me,
wiggling its butt like a siren.
Then, she pauses and sits.."Meow..."

Sprawling on the floor,
she gently lifts her leg, then...
licks herself clean.

I can see it! I can see it!
A small thimble, and pink!
She looks up at me...
I blush...
She's gone.
