November 2005 ~ "Open Theme"

For November we had an open theme, allowing our poets the opportunity to write about any subject they chose.

Below are the top poems, though we feel every single poem is a winner! The other poems are on the following page.

Thank you to Valatine for our beautiful awards, and to everyone who took the time to read our poems and vote!

Congratulations to our November winners!

My Hero

My hero isn't the cowboy in the white hat
Nor the singer who croons sweet sounding songs.
My hero is not the politician nor the famed stars,
My hero is but the young women and men
Who are giving their lives for you and me.
The young folk who will see tales of horror
The young folk who will die for you and me
My hero is someone whose name I don't know
Whose life they proudly put on the line
So that you and I are able to remain free.
They fight for our rights to freedom of speech
For the right to keep our lives as we know
For the right to choose who head our Country
For the right to go wherever we might go.
My hero, if you haven't guessed, is not one
But many, who serve their Country with Pride.
My hero is of many races and religions,
My heroes are each member of the Military
Each an individual, scared but determined
To protect the likes of you and me
Determined to keep us alive and free.

Treasured Memories

On this rocky road of life
Sometimes we take a fall
While other times, if all goes right
We're able to stand tall

Friendships made and treasured
Are kept within our hearts
Through thick and thin and in-between
Friends shall never part

Life is much to precious
To be put in stride
Cherish all that has been given
Keep memories alive

A CHANCE

Give me a reason; show me you care;
Give me your word, be kind and fair.
Show me compassion, write me a book;
Give me a glance, a glimpse, a look.
Show me your heart, give me a motion;
Lend me your ear, show me emotion.
Give me some space, give me some time;
Show me some passion, give me a sign.
Give me a sense of joy and delight;
Knowing together we can, we might.
Together our purpose in life is clear;
Seizing life’s moments with nothing to fear.
A sense of adventure, we are a team;
Living, loving, and reaching our dream.
Let us embark down the path of romance;
All that I ask is you give me a chance.

WEEPING FOR AN OLD FRIEND

In the storm's aftermath
we search for candles
and check for damage.
The venerable oak came down
in slow agony,
rattling the windows
and our nerves.
I weep in silence
for the loss of my friend:
mute reminder
of my children climbing
and laughing
among leafy branches.
I am left with an ache
as when my best friend
moved away.
Grieving is useless,
but I still grieve.
The tree is gone
only a hole remains.

Season's Reflections

Witnessing the seasons change
As we prepare for once again
A time for love and peace and joy
That can't be found in gifts or toys.

For while the passing of the year
Brings to us all kinds of cheer,
Do we stop to meditate
The reason why we celebrate?

Is it for the loss of lives
In hurricanes and waveless tides,
Or for the war within Iraq
Tell me does it stretch that far?

When senseless acts or violent crime
A governed fate of man's design
Why do we then seek to blame
The one from which we turn away?

So soon the year it passes by
And drawing near is Christmas time,
As shadows linger in the wake
Forgetting why we celebrate.

How sad it seems we've lost the joy
Born to us through one small boy,
Because the one and only reason
Remains throughout all of life's seasons.
