May 2007 Theme ~ "The Rose"

Our theme this month was "The Rose" and our poets were encouraged to write whatever they felt that related to this simple theme....

Congratulations to our May winners!

The Last Rose of Summer

A long hot summer now is fading
And chill is in the air,
I walked today in my garden
And saw changes everywhere.

A sweet and fragrant rose
Dropped its petals as I passed,
Its beauty now has faded
Of course it could not last.

I touched the velvet petals
And somehow thought of you.
I sensed your time of struggle
The effort to get through.

Keep your eye upon the hedgerow
And not the thorns below,
And you will see the rose ~
You will watch it grow

You will smell the sweet perfume
Its petals you will touch.
Just know that friends are out there
And that they care so much.

The Rose

The sight of her took his breath away
As she stood waiting in the rain
Her face was that of an angel
So lovely her golden mane

His heart skipped a beat at her beauty
Her elegance was that of a queen
Slowly he began to approach her
His eyes held a loving gleam

Suddenly she turned towards him
And a smile lit up her face
She held her arms out towards him
As her heart quickly began to race

He hugged her tenderly to him
as he whispered in her ear
You're as lovely as the day I met you
Even after all of these years

He handed her a single red rose
She smiled as she smelled its bouquet
"A rose for a rose" he whispered
Just like on our wedding day

evidence not first seen

petals of soft velvet
innocence shining forth
pink pale and beautiful
a beauty to behold
unless in that moment
you take a glance below
following stems of evergreen
to the thorns of brown
a drop of crimson
evidence of a life
scarred forever
red contrasting green
dripping slowly down
the earth taking the offering
roots reaching forth
rebirth and a new life
next year's budding beauties
without the thorns
of the past pushing forth
