July 2006 Theme ~ "My Country"
Our theme this month, in keeping with the Birthday Bash theme of
friends in various countries around the world, was to write a poem
about your country, and why you loved it.
Everyone in the Garden of Friendship was invited to participate. The winning
poems are below, and other "My Country" poems are on the following page.
Special thanks go toLady Crystal of the GOF Awards Committee for the beautiful personalized
awards, which she made especially for each winner's country.
Congratulations to our July winners!
Why I Love the USA
I live in the land of the brave and the free
Where you can be you and I can be me.
I've traveled this country and seen all its glory
And the people I've met make a wonderful story.
Some were young, some were old,
Some were of ages untold.
Some loved trees, some loved money,
Some loved salt, some loved honey.
I've met folks from all different classes -
The poor, the rich, the huddled masses.
I've talked and debated with great minds and souls -
I've partied and played with faeries and trolls.
The thing I love most about this country of mine
Is that most of those folks were friendly and kind -
No matter the place, no matter the time,
No matter the reason our lives intertwined.

I Love to Live in England
I love to live in England, dodging all the rain.
It may be wet it may be cold but I love it just the same.
Our countryside is beautiful with grass so very green
Beaches, lakes and mountains all of which can be seen
I admire our Royal Family and all the work they do
Certainly not a life style that would work for me and you
With our centuries of history and castles by the score
There is always somewhere special and exciting to explore
Cumbria, the Lake District is where I lay my head
And I thank the Lord for all I have each night when I go to bed
I love to live in England, there's no better place to be
I love to live in England, it's just simply home to me

The Great South Land
Crystal pristine waters and rugged coastline views
Cloudless skies at sunset with painted orange hues,
Salty air cascading from waves upon the sand
In sweet refreshing splendour, this is the great south land.
Mountain ranges echo through channels of coolness
The crisp and vibrant chatter harmonic to the bush,
Composed by Mother Nature a symphony so grand
Of bellbirds, crows and kookaburras, this is the great south land.
Scorching heat so humid that's found along the coast
Is drier in the outback but still so hot you'd roast,
And miles of dust and open plains across this vast expanse
From east to west and north to south, this is the great south land.
Yet there's snow upon the mountains and sunshine in the sky
And despite the chill of winter this "river's" running dry,
The harshness of this climate sees no rainfall in the dams
And still we see its beauty within this great south land.
A place of vast extremities I really must confess
Though Dorothea Mackellar still somehow said it best,
This is a sunburnt country, though beautiful and grand
From the beaches to the outback, this is the great south land.

My Home
The story of Canada is a lengthy one
Stand tall, stand proud my son
You live in a country where heroes are born
We strive for peace, each and every morn.
Built a nation, a culture within a mosaic
A free vote, makes this country tick
We may not always agree
That's what makes us free.
Within the world, we are known
Four seasons, the country is shown
Winter, spring, summer and fall
Beauty and splendor shows in them all.
A different ocean on each side
Thousands of miles, enjoy the ride
At the south, chainless borders bring forth
The cold Arctic is to our north.
I know no other way to live
So for you my friend, is what I give
This land spans far and wide
Walking together, side by side.
