January 2006 Theme ~ "Nostalgia"
Our January Contest Theme was "Nostalgia", defined as "a wistful
or sentimental yearning to return to some past period or condition."
Our assignment was to write a nostalgic poem about something
fondly remembered from childhood....a favorite toy, a happy
experience, or a fond memory of someone special.
Our winners and their poems are below, and additional entries
are on the following page. Our thanks to Pacpat of the GOF
Awards Committee for our lovely awards this month!
Congratulations to our January winners!
Mama's Hands
There's nothing like a mother's touch--dedicated to my precious mother
I used to watch my mama's hands when I was very young.
They held a mystery like a rhyme or a song left unsung.
I used to watch her fingers as they soothed away the pain
Of any hurt I may have had and dry the tears that came.
Mama's hands were oh, so tender and soft as they could be.
I bet she never noticed how they bewildered me.
They clothed me and they fed me and combed my long dark hair,
Tended to my every need with tender loving care.
The way they pulled me close to her whene'er I felt afraid,
they'd gently reassure me and chase my fears away.
How I'd sit and ponder as I held her hand in mine,
How did all those things get in there? Are they in there all the time?
And still today, so faithfully, like a never-ending drama,
I try to solve the mystery within the hands of my dear mama.

The Color Of Autumn
A new morning
A light mist covering the valley just before sun rise
This time will forever be a memory in my mind
As the sun casts light over the night skies
Before the break of the new dawn
Sending a crimson reflection over all
A gentle breeze moving the fallen leaves
Dancing them over the ground
The old oak trees standing tall
Raining the colors of the Fall
As children we would chase the leaves
Running through the old trees
And dance to their tune of Autumn
We would run and jump from the old tree stump
And the leaves would swirl around us
And gently fall to the ground
We would lay there in the leaves
And gaze up into the trees
While in our own Daydreams
We would dream the colors of Autumn

Pap Pap and Kings
Sitting up on his lap,
his eyes shining,
a hint of a smile,
playing at his lips.
Bouncing up and down,
waiting to be asked the question,
My mind already envisioning the trip...
Down through East McKeesport,
past the Giant Eagle,
at the light by the K-Mart,
we'd find...King's!
Our favorite place for that
mouth-watering, sweet, delicious...
Cinnamon ice cream!
My Pap Pap knew I loved it
and I sat there waiting for him to ask,
"Have you been a good girl today?"

Dear Grandpa,
You’ve been gone, I know its been years,
Yet I’ve still cried many tears.
You’re missed beyond measure,
All the times we shared together I truly treasure.
I’m thankful for the time we had,
I see you in your son, my dad.
Grandpa, I miss you, your smile, your heart,
You made me feel special, and that’s just a part,
Of all that you did, those moments in time,
I wish I could hug you, and make you just mine.
I see you, I hear you, your eyes sparkling blue,
I know in my heart that you really knew.
You ready to greet us when we pulled up to the door,
How I wanted to be with you, always more and more.
Your camera was flashing, your smile what a factor;
Remember when I almost drove over my brother’s toe with the tractor?
Your memories are strong, overwhelming and fresh.
I miss you grandpa, you are the best.
You’re loved today and forever,
Signed…. your granddaughter whose love for you will never sever.
