December 2005 Theme ~ "Favourite Winter Holiday"

Winter white snow
glistening like flakes of gold
crunching under my feet below
I love all Christmases when it snows

Christmas Eve Tranquility

The lovely sound of sleigh bells
A soft warm ember glow
The gentle fall of snowflakes
Of winter's first newly fallen snow

Stockings have been hung
Christmas Eve has come at last
Children are all snuggled
Dreaming of Christmas present and the past

Basking in the silence
'Cept for a crackle of the fire
Enjoying quiet and the tranquility
Which we all seem to desire

Tomorrow's Christmas morn
Which will be filled with shouts and cheers of delight
But as for now, I'll just enjoy
The peace that's come this night

Who Killed Rudolph?!

So, are you wonderin' why you didn't see Santa this year?
It's because he had lost his favorite reindeer.
Seems Rudolph was makin' a turn to the west,
He swooped down too low, and you know the rest.
I was told he hit fog and by the time he could see,
He was hit by a rig, but the others broke free!
They say Santa yelled in the wee of the night...
"Watch it Rudolph! Swing to the right!",
But, he was too late, tho he said he could see
On the side of that rig a Number 223.
But the truck didn't stop, just as we feared,
He kept rollin' along and then disappeared.
Then wouldn't you know it, as quick as a lick..
Someone showed up who had taken a 'pic.
So, I'll show it to you and hope you don't mind,
To help catch this rig.. it's one of a kind.
You see, you can't miss it, 'cause here's the deal,
it's got a big reindeer stuck on the grill.

St. Nick's Day

Of all the days from which to pick,
My favorite's named for old St. Nick.
For every year on six December,
He gives us all help to remember
Just why we celebrate this season
And what we know is the real reason
Why we hang up our stockings high
With hopes of goodies when he's nigh.

One evening very long ago,
St. Nicholas, the story goes,
Helped out three ladies in distress
With gifts of gold anonymous
Put in their stockings hung to dry
As they all three did sleeping lie.
But when his secret someone told,
His good deed spread around the world.

And so we celebrate this way
The gifts he gave to save the day
His love and generosity
Toward those less fortunate than we.
It gives us all a joyous lift,
Reminds us of the greatest gift
To everyone, both big and small,
Of one small child to save us all.

Waiting for Santa

'Twas the night before Christmas
and I could not sleep
I was waiting for Santa
but I heard not a peep.

Wondering the hour
when he would appear
Loaded with presents,
goodwill, love and cheer.

I silently tiptoe
out into the hall
To take my position
alone on the floor;

When a shadow then passes
and I turn to see
That my brother is also
unable to sleep.

So the night before Christmas
curled up by the tree
We waited the hours,
my brother and me

Wondering when Santa
would walk through our door,
But we fell asleep waiting
and woke up Christmas morn!

Traditions and Memories

Adornments light the town making it look imaginary
As we travel slowly on Christmas Eve.
The cross is lit up as we enter a mostly darkened sanctuary,
Where we kneel quietly at the altar, thanking God for all we receive.

We pray for those less fortunate and lift up praise for the year.
Together as a family we receive Holy Communion
Remembering the reason for this celebration and cheer
And grateful for this time of togetherness and reunion.

Before heading home we drive about gazing at the festive lights.
Taking turns choosing favorite songs for all to sing
Love in our hearts keeps us warm as we enjoy the sites
and an evening filled with joyous laughter and caroling,

At home we sip hot cider around the tree lit up for Christmas.
We talk and read of the Saviors birth from Luke chapter two.
Ending with Clemet Moore’s "A Visit from St. Nicholas"
Before snuggling under quilts and dreaming of the morning to ensue.

Holiday magic soon has the house wondrously transformed
Stockings brim and bulge and gifts neatly arrayed.
Yet it is in the warm glow of family love memories are formed
And this bond that remains even though the splendor may fade.

A Cold Winter's Night

We walked out of the store,
the cold wind hitting our face like ice.
We stood there hand in hand,
My little hand in Mom's,
hers in Dad's.

It had been getting colder lately,
and the clouds in the sky looked like they held snow.
I put my hands up to my face and blew on my mittens.
"Brrrrrrr..."

Mom smiled down at me
and motioned for me to follow her to the car.
We walked down the row of cars,
her eyes twinkling in the lights

I can remember it started snowing then,
and the snow hit her curly hair and sat there
The white mingled in with the light brown hue,
she looked like she was wearing a tiara of snow.

I giggled then and held my tongue out,
trying to catch the snow,
but all I got was a wet mouth.

Mom smiled again,
and I remember thinking then and everyday since then,
that night was the best start to a holiday season ever.
The cold air, my family together, and the snow.
The holidays have never felt so magical.

15 days till Christmas

Early in the morning
As the sun comes creeping up
I feel my daughter Ana’s
Soft and gentle touch.

She whisperings quietly in my ear
Before my eyes are open
"Mama only 15 more days
Till its Christmas morning.."

This is a daily ritual
And happens every year
It fills my heart with happiness
From the excitement in her voice I hear.

Nature's Painting

The Day has a strange chill
The dark clouds cover the suns shadow upon the earth
Casting a darkness over the land
The day is like an early dusk before the sunset
Very dark for the time
Then the light fades and the snow starts to fall
The first sign of Christmas is here

Looking across into the valley of time
It is like watching white cotton balls dancing their own waltz
To natures tune
The valley takes on a haunting new look
Of a white perfection covering the earth's face
The ferns bow to the weight of the snow with a silent beauty
Not a footprint to break the crystal glaze covering the ground
As all is quiet
Not even the snow can you hear falling
The land is a picture of purity unspoilt by the touch of life

The sun is now pushing its face through the dark clouds
Sending the colors of the rainbow
Over the crystal face of the snow covered lands
With the rainbows promise never to be broken
The portrait has now been painted by the hand of Nature
For this time of the year
A Christmas Wonderland
