List Poems

This is a poem organized around a central theme. The idea is to write a "list" of things that relate to that particular theme. For our first attempts, we wrote our list poems about a color.

What Is Sunshine Yellow?

Yellow is the sunshine
On days when skies are clear,
Fluffy little ducklings
Walking without fear.
Bananas growing on the vine
Lemons on the tree,
Golden and delicious apples
Picked especially for me.
Fresh eggs collected from the hens
With sunshine yellow yolks
Wheat ripening in the fields
Brings special joy to folks.
Daffodils in springtime
Pure magic to my soul,
Special blossoms in my garden
Making me feel whole.
A candle flame at evening
A rose whose name is "Peace"
Yellow brings to me such joys
I hope will never cease.

What Is Lavender?

Lavender is lilacs,
Fragrance on the breeze,
Iris in the springtime,
Pretty as you please.
Lavender is mountains,
Smoky in the mist,
Lavender is evening skies,
By sun softly kissed.
Lavender's a kitten,
Softest shade of gray,
Lavender is grandma's
Fragrant sachet.
Lavender's a feeling
When you're not quite blue,
It's that peace of knowing
All will still work out for you.

What Is Pink?

Pink is peonies in May,
Puffy cotton candy on carnival day,
Pink's a baby newly born,
Pink is cherry candy corn.
Pink is gum for bubble blowing,
Pink is cherry blossoms growing.
Pink's strawberry ice cream cones,
Tiny rosebuds and Princess phones.
Pink is little girls so sweet
From their heads down to their feet.
Pink's the sky as the sun goes down,
Casting its magic all over town.

What is Yellow?

A vast expanse of sunflowers
a carpet painted yellow
A dainty little daffodil
dancing in the meadow -
A ripened crop of wheat
harvested in the field
And yet a drought's first colour
when nothing brings to yield.

The humbleness of the bee
as it rests upon a flower
The sweetened scent of pollen
ripened by the hour -
The turning leaves in autumn
glistening in the sun,
The shaded hue of sunset
when the day is done.

Seasoned fruits that grow
mature on the trees
Their mellow taste perfected
their scent upon the breeze -
The sweetened flesh of peaches
and delicate nectarines,
While fields of corn so supersweet
the best I've ever seen.

Yet in the birth of springtime
when colour comes to life
It's the brilliant ray of sunshine
that lights up the once-grey sky -
For yellow is the colour
so radiant in array,
But most of all I see it when
you bring sunshine's to my days.

What is Blue?

A cloudless sky on a summer's day
A baby's eyes so wide awake
The peaceful waters of the sea -
The colour of tranquillity.

A kingfisher's azure beauty
A bluebell dancing in the breeze
A butterfly on gossamer wings -
The colour of the vibrant spring.

The laughter in my husband's eyes
The uniform he wears each night
Reflections on the stars above -
The colour of my world of love.

A pen with which I use to write
The sheets upon my bed each night
The curtains hanging in my room -
The colour that's my favourite too.

A day old bruise upon the skin
The icy chill of winter's din
The tears with which the heart does see -
The colour of melancholy.

Heartache where one does not see
Shadows metaphorically
Tears I cry that's somehow still
The colour which I sometimes feel.

Reflections of these things and more
A whisper, a sound, a waterfall,
A peace, a beauty, a dream come true,
The world of colour painted blue.

Nature's Green Shadow

Green is the color of nature's realm
A color of tranquility that places you under a spell
Walking along the banks of a crystal clear stream
Where the ferns are weeping in the Springtime rain
The color of moss on the forest floor soft under your feet as you walk

Green is the color of the fields where I used to play
The distant mountains' majestic views
That I would love to share with you
A landscape painted by nature's hand
Where you feel you are living in a dream of this land

Green is the color of a new Spring season
The buds of new blooms before they open
To show their vivid color on the backdrop of your garden
Where the birds sit and sing in the mist of the morning
The tune of the season at a new day's dawn

The color of green places a peace within my soul
When walking through the rain forests so tall
Where the wild life is always in tune with freedom
A place where I love to sit alone and let my mind run free
Green is the color that is so special to me

What is Blue?

Blue is the sky on a clear summer day
Blue is the sea crashing all around
Blue is the colour of a baby boy’s room
Blue is the colour of smurf cartoons!
Blue is a rose swaying in the wind

A crayon in a box
A baby in a cot
Nail polish,
Lip stick,
Birds in the sky.

All these things are blue
I wonder why?

What is Green?

Life
And Living
Things that grow
The grass down at my toe
Eyes of a child gazing round
Broccoli that by band carefully bound
