Our "Littlest" Christmas Poems

Our first Mini Assignment for December was to write a poem or short story about "The Littlest ..........", using something related to the holiday season.

The Littlest Candle

Once upon a Christmastime, way down in the basement of an old church, there was a little candle, tucked in among all the other candles waiting to be decorated for the Christmas Eve Candle Service. It was the littlest candle's greatest wish to be a part of this beautiful service, but he knew he was shorter than all the rest, and was sure he would never be chosen.

The ladies of the church were busy wrapping all the other candles in their frilly red paper holders, when the little candle heard a soft, sweet voice saying "Look, Mommy, there's a baby candle still in the box! Could I hold that one tonight?" He looked up to see a small girl wearing an angel costume. The littlest candle found himself being lifted up, snugly wrapped with frilly red paper around his base, and then clutched in tiny fingers and carried up some stairs. He heard beautiful music playing, and saw the flickering lights of hundreds of other candles being held in the church. At the front of the church he saw children dressed as shepherds, angels, a mother and a father, and a baby in a tiny cradle filled with hay.

The little girl said "Mommy, will you light my baby candle from your big candle?" and suddenly he felt very warm as he was lit for the first time, and his little flame glowed brighter and brighter. Then the little girl slowly walked down the aisle to the front of the church, and knelt down by the baby in the cradle, carefully holding the littlest candle.

Suddenly there was a voice saying, "I am the Light of the World." The littlest candle glowed with pride, because he knew he was taking part in a very, very special night.

The Littlest King

He was born one night in Bethlehem
beneath a guiding star
As tears fell from his father's eyes
the love within his heart,
Became an offering to all
man, woman or child,
Who would accept this Christmas gift
so tiny meek and mild.

Wrapped in swaddling cloths he lay
a manger for his bed
Within a stable all forlorn
to rest his weary head,
As shepherds tending to their flocks
and wise men from afar
Came to see the little one
within his mother's arms.

Filled with all the love and awe
at this child's birth
The message spread to all mankind
the night love came to earth,
Within the form of a babe
whose promise was to be
The greatest Christmas gift of all
born just for you and me.

Born that night in Bethlehem
beneath that guiding star
The little one became the man
whose love would fill our hearts,
But on that night so long ago
when angels came to sing
In celebration of the birth
of the littlest King.

The Littlest Angel

Atop our tree she sits
Watching our Christmas scene
With bells and boughs aplenty
She closes her eyes to dream.

She dreams of the day she will hear it
The sound of the sweet ringing bell
The day she will get her wings
As the story she once heard tell.

Years and years go on for her
She waits patiently to hear
Then one day it happens
The sound came out so clear.

A bell was ringing just for her
Her wings began to grow
She flew up to the heavens
And the rest of the story we all know.

The angel atop of our Christmas tree
Means different things each alone
But to me it means there's someone
Watching over my Christmas home.

The Littlest Snowflake

The littlest snowflake
Fell from the sky
Symbolizing peace and love
And times long gone by

This littlest snowflake
Drifted on down
Landing gently on gloves
Small eyes suddenly got round

A small cherubic face
Now lit with glee
Held up her hands
For all to see

Within her hands
The snowflake now sat
Shining with brilliance
For the soul it had met

Was pure and bright
And filled with nothing but love
The real reason of the season
What the holidays are really made of

The Littlest Christmas Tree

The Littlest Christmas Tree
Sadly sits in the back
As Christmas customers
Want the front ones
big pretty ones

The Littlest Christmas tree
Still remains in back
Till one day
The littlest person came by
He said I'll take the little one in the back!

The sales man said are you sure?
No one wants a little bald tree.
The little man said I do...
it looks just like me :)

The Littlest Angel

There is an angel atop our Christmas tree
Who will always be a part of you and me
She passed away three years ago this December
Our love will never die we'll always remember

There is a second golden angel atop our tree
Too beautiful for this earth to be
My grandson stillborn this year
On Christmas Day we will shed a tear

My daughter and my grandson are now at peace
Their pain has ended bringing sweet release
To love and guide us from the golden gates
A love so divine for us all awaits

The years will pass but we will always remember
Especially through this beautiful December
A time for love peace and joy
A special birth of a beautiful boy

The Littlest Star

Once there was a very small star. In fact, it was the littlest star ever to be seen. This poor little star was so sad as she felt no one would ever see her and she would never make an impact on anyone. But the littlest star did not let this stop her. Every time anything came up, no matter the importance, she would get out there and shine her very best, just to be left behind because she was so small.

One day the littlest star heard a voice asking "Where are all my stars? I need one who can shine very brightly." The littlest star stepped forward and said, "I am the only star left without a job. I may be little, but I can shine very bright!" "Show me how bright you can shine," the voice said kindly. The littlest star shined very bright and lit the whole sky in one area. The voice said, "You shine very bright and will do well for the job I have for you. I need you to shine over a certain manger in Bethlehem and this will lead the three wise men to the new babe who has been born."

So the littlest star did as bade and while she did shine her very best, the angels sang unto the newborn King, and the three wise men followed her bright light to give him their gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.

The Littlest Girl

The littlest girl in the world
was crying Christmas Eve
her friends said that Santa Claus
would look for her then leave.

They said that Santa couldn't see
a girl so small and frail
and anything she hoped to happen
was sure to simply fail.

The littlest girl on Christmas Eve
wondered if it was all true
that Santa couldn't see her
and forget her through and through.

But she laughed on Christmas Day
when she saw her tree
For Santa had delivered her
not one present but THREE!

The Littlest Bell

It’s cold out there
Standing on the curb,
ringing that little bell,
asking for money for the poor.

People rush on by,
some try to pretend they don’t see me,
but the little bell,
they can hear that sound,
all over the parking lot.

Others smile sheepishly,
turning out their coat pockets as if to say--“See I’m poor too!”
I just smile back and wish them a good holiday.

Once in awhile though,
there is finally one,
one who has heard this little bell ring
from across the parking lot they’ll come,
with a big grin on their face and a few dollars in hand.

They stuff the bills in the kettle,
quickly walk away,
But that show of kindness,
it keeps me going.

Through the rest of the evening,
come rain or snow I’ll be here,
me and the littlest bell in hand,
ringing for the poor.

The Littlest Present

I’m the littlest present under the tree
So small, so tiny, just what can I be?
My paper is plain, my ribbon is tattered,
If you shake me don’t worry I can’t be shattered.
Inside this present, I have a great start.
You can’t measure me in dollars,
I come from the heart.
So what can I be? What can be so small?
Who in the world would want me at all?
I’m a gift you can’t shelter, close up or hide.
I’m not heavy, or tall, or short, or wide.
There's a lot to me; I’m small to compare;
But I'm priceless and worth it, I’ll make you aware.
That life is a blessing, from heaven above
Filled with happiness, sadness, my present?
Is love.

My Littlest Red Box

I am just the Littlest Red Box
With a green ribbon tied
Hiding here right under
The Christmas tree
But when you open me
And take a look
There is nothing you will see
But right there inside
There is a special gift
From me
Just for you
There is a Special Wish
Right here inside
So don't tell anyone
Just hold it close and true
It is your little secret
And then this Christmas wish
Will come true
Just for you
