The Etheree

The Etheree was created about 20 years ago by Arkansas poet Etheree Taylor Armstrong. It consists of ten lines of unmetered and unrhymed verse. The first line has one syllable, the second line has two syllables, the third line has three syllables, and so on until the tenth line has ten syllables. An Etheree should focus on a single idea or subject. Our assignment was to write an Etheree.

This was the first attempt at this form for most of us, and we thought we did rather well!

ginger,
cinnamon,
smells fill the air,
floating on the breeze
through the open window,
all across the neighborhood.
Children gather on the front porch,
giggling, hoping for a chance to taste...
Grandma is baking fresh cookies today.

Fall,
Autumn,
Seasonal.
Play in the leaves,
rake them into piles.
Leaves falling from the trees.
The grass is now turning brown.
The air has got a chill to it.
The children love to drink hot cocoa
And we sit by the fireplace now warm.

Rain
falling
from the skies,
washing the trees,
watering the plants,
giving new life to all
living things surrounding us.
Washing away despair, giving
us hope and a fresh outlook of life,
thanking our Lord for another new day.

Frost
Winter
Chilly Air
Mittens are wet
Cold toes everywhere
My nose is running now
Laughter filled the snow mans smile
Fluffy snow falls down all the while
Sleds slide quickly down the hill side now
Soon the snow will come and children will laugh

Rose
budding
at the dawn,
kissed by the dew.
Enjoy the brightness,
tiny little sparkles
shining through and through for you
from a tiny drop of water,
the beginning of a special morn.
The world doesn't seem so awfully sad.

Grace
abides
eternal,
warming my heart,
the source of my strength,
the peace within my soul,
and the wind beneath my wings.
He is right here for you also.
Call His name, ask for his help, believe,
His grace and His love will carry you through.

Grass
growing,
thick and green,
in my back yard,
getting much too tall.
Time to take some action!
Mower cuts it down to size.
Relaxing, I enjoy my yard,
trying not to think of when I must
do it all over again the next week.

The
days
went by
so fast now
the year starts
again the summers
soon gone and class
will begin for yet another
year tests taken marks
given and reports handed out

Dawn
Sunrise
Morning shadows
Silhouetting the day
Crystal colors on the earth
Painting the canvas of life
The day comes to light
New flower buds sway
In the silent breeze of time
Painting the portrait of a new Spring Day

Days
go by
so quickly
as Christmastime
seems to drawn nearer
with every passing year
as we keep getting older
and the world keeps getting weirder
one thing will always remain the same
Life, love and laughter - the bond of friendship.

I
listen
in silence
darkness evokes
a tumultuous
whirlwind of emotion
as death awaits me and I
pause to reflect on nothingness,
and I gaze at the edge of heaven
but can only stand at the gates to hell.

Aim
Direct
Show me how
to be happy.
I remember when
I lost my way somehow
I wandered off the best path
And it became too late to change.
Kindly point the way and I'll follow.
Together we'll find me again. Show me.
