July Theme Contest

In honour of the Garden's 8th Birthday Poetic Expressions is opening this month's theme contest to all Garden members.

Our Birthday Bash theme is a special one (in keeping with the overall "Pieces of Eight" theme). I would like for your to think on the Treasure of Friendship and write about the treasures found in friendship or the treasures of a particular friend incorporating the use of EIGHT within your poem. You can choose how to use EIGHT in any way you wish - whether it be 8 lines, 8 stanzas (paragraphs), 8 treasures of friendship or by using the number 8 anywhere within the poem. It is entirely up to you as the writer, but you must incorporate the three keys of the theme - Treasure, Friendship & Eight.

Deadline for submissions is Thursday 17th July.

Submissions are to be a maximum of 32 lines (8 stanzas).
Poems must be family-friendly.  Your TITLE may be anything you choose, as long as the CONTENT relates to our theme.

Enjoy writing this and please send PRIVATELY to pestaff@gmail.com
****PLEASE DO NOT SEND THEME POEMS THROUGH COMMITTEE MAIL!!!****

As always, the three poets receiving the most votes will receive graphic awards made by our Awards Committee, and all of the poems will be added to our PE website.  Remember that this is the main requirement for PE, so everyone must participate.  Anyone failing to do so must be reported inactive.

MINI ASSIGNMENTS FOR JULY (SO FAR)
Mini assignments should be sent through PE committee mail for all of us to read and to comment on if we wish. . .

Mini #1: Pieces of Eight Acrostic

For our first mini this month write in Acrostic form using the words Pieces of Eight

MINI #2: Baking a Friendship Cake

Week 2 of the Birthday Bash sees us with yet another mini assignment and challenge. This week you are to "Bake a Cake" in verse incorporating EIGHT (8) ingredients of friendship within 20 lines or less. So poet/chefs - hightail it to the kitchen and get cracking! We want to have these scrumptious cakes ready for consumption by the Garden when we are spotlighted. *g*
We look forward to a sample of your "cakes".

Mini #3: Treasure Chest List Poem

List some of the things you would find in a treasure chest in EIGHT lines. This would in effect be a List Poem. What you find in your treasure chest is completely up to you. We look forward to seeing what you may come up with!

During the slow periods between mini assignments, you are
welcome to send your own original poetry, or any poetry that
has special meaning to you, through committee mail.

If at any time you need help with a poem, with rhyming,
meters, or a title for your poem, or a critique of it by our
members, feel free to ask either through committee mail
or privately, and we will do our best to help.

COMMITTEE REQUIREMENTS IN POETIC EXPRESSIONS
Members of the Garden of Friendship must be active on their committees. The requirements in PE are as follows:
(1) Participate in the Monthly Theme Contest by writing an original poem on the subject given, and
(2) Participate in at least one mini assignment each month.
You may participate in as many mini assignments as you wish, and we encourage this.

Records are kept of all activity, and we must report inactive members every month.  Failure to participate will result in removal from this committee and possibly from the Garden.
