Caring For Your American Staffordshire Terrier
Submitted by Member Selena

First of all, American Staffordshire Terriers are different from American Pit Bull Terriers themselves. If you are going to get one or own one depending in your area. Please visit the links below from The Hit Television Series The Dog Whisperer. Although Cesar Millan does rehabilitate dogs of this breed he also does the same for all dogs.

American Staffordshire Terriers are miss read in appearance due to the nature of American Pit Bull Terriers. If you get a dog, get a puppy as they are easier to take care of. While they are young they will learn allot. Some older dogs are ok to get, however; they will be used to their previous handling.

American Staffordshire Terriers are used as bait dogs for the American Pit Bull Terriers to fight against. Many of them are puppies and other types of dogs. Cesar Millan always says that "YOU ARE THE PACK LEADER". The dogs must follow you and your commands, this is all part of being considered as general care.

Start by getting your dog vaccinated before you get him or her, and see that he gets yearly booster vaccinations to maintain his immunity to disease. Consult your veterinarian about flea control products and worming your dog. Feed your American Staffordshire Terrier high-grade dog food. The first ingredient should be meat if you want a quality product. Crude protein should be no less than 30 percent and crude fat no less than 20 percent. The fiber content needs to be 4 percent or less.

American Staffordshire Terriers require lots of exercise and play time. This will help him or her to be friendly. Take good care of American Staffordshire Terrier. Make sure he or she knows all of your commands.

Keep your American Staffordshire Terriers on a leash and collar. Choke chains are ok BUT ONLY AS A TRAINING AIDE FOR GETTING YOUR DOG USED TO A LEASH. Socialize your American Staffordshire Terrier when he or she is young to be with people and other animals. Establish your authority over your dog and be sure to take him to public areas, giving strangers the opportunity to pet and play with him or her. This will help the dog develop an even temper.

Never, and I mean NEVER, isolate your American Staffordshire Terrier. Isolation will cause the American Staffordshire Terrier to be very aggressive - you do not want this. Also, make sure that your American Staffordshire Terrier is not aggressive towards his or her food bowl. If Yyou want to have 2 of these dogs, feed them separately. This will prevent fighting for their food. There are 2 different pictures below, can you tell the difference between them? Please visit these first 2 links for more information on the difference between these two dogs. Visit Cesar Millan's links as well.

Never, Never, Never try to crop your American Staffordshire Terrier's ears yourself, take them to a vet so that it can be done safely. It would be better to leave your American Staffordshire Terrier's ears just the way they are. If the ears are cropped they may have been mistaken for American Pit Bull Terriers. If they happen to bite someone by mistake. This could result in losing your dog.
