Chinese Evergreen
(Aglaonema)
~ By Betty G. ~
One of my favorite houseplants is the
Chinese Evergreen. Although there are 5 different varieties, the one I
have is known as "The Silver King".
In my home, I have three of them on top of my bedroom bookcase
where all three of them are thriving with a northern exposure and
morning indirect light from my window. It is a well-known fact that the
Silver King variety is one of the best plants to grow in areas where
light is lacking.
When potting your Chinese Evergreen, be sure to give it a rich mix
that is porous or well-draining. The plant thrives with lots of water, but
amazingly, it can do with little water as well. Of course, your plant
would not be as lush. My Silver King has reached a height of nearly a
foot and a half in just a year's time and is absolutely gorgeous in my
eyes.
Aglaonema Modestum is the more technical name of the Chinese
Evergreen, which is best loved for its ornamental foliage. Its leaves are
narrow and dark green with gorgeous streaks of silver running through them.
As an added bonus, during the year the plant produces a white flower that
resembles one you often see on a peace lily or a calla.
I highly recommend the Chinese Evergreen to anyone who is looking for
a striking house plant that will grow well in low light and with little care.
As mentioned above, I do have the Silver King variety. The Silver Queen
differs only in the size of its leaves. Four other varieties are available in
any nursery.
