Window Boxes

(Submitted by Aletha)

Hello, well for those that live within the Northern Hemisphere the weather is getting colder and getting to the point where we can not do too much outside but for those in the Southern Hemisphere we still have the growing season or going into it more so.

Here is something we can do and put it on a porch to bring us some more color in October, November and December. We can go to the nursery and pick up some fall plants even small mums, to put in a window box and oh how pretty that would look if you have a front porch or a window sill on an outside window. This is just an example below, on two that you can do.

Goldenrod, Marigolds & Kale in a Window Box

3 Golden Fleece goldenrod

4 French marigolds

2 Ornamental kale

Container: 24" Window Box

Light needs: Tolerates partial to full sun

Planting: Place the goldenrod plants in a line in the center of the window box, with the kale on each end. Place 2 marigolds in the front center and 2 in the back center of the box between the goldenrod.

Boxwood & Evergreen Branches in a Window Box

2 Boxwood

Several branches of Holly and Cotoneaster with berries

Container: 36" Window Box

Light needs: Tolerates shade to full sun

Planting: Place the boxwood on either side of the window box and fill the rest with the evergreen branches of holly and cotoneaster.

Another Fall Planting Idea

(Submitted by Diane)

Here is another Idea for fall planting. I have planted these and they did come back in spring.

One plant that we often overlook for winter color in this region is winter flowering pansies, sometimes called "Ice pansies" they flower at exactly the opposite time as summer flowering varieties. The ones I have in my garden are beautiful all winter.

After shearing them back in the spring, they bush out and provide unlimited color all summer. When fall returns and the evenings become cooler they once again burst into full bloom, each plant having a dozen or more flowers.
