The September Garden

~ By Aletha ~

I wonder how many of us will go out and buy some of those fall bulbs and get them planted for spring bloom? I know I think in the spring I should have done that but at the time got busy with other things in my life or what was going on around me. But if I Journal I will remember to put a note on the month I am to do this and then remember to go out and buy some.

It also helps to take pictures of your spring garden and if you would love to incorporate certain bulbs or plants into it, well September is the time to do this or divide some plants and move them to their new location.

We also have to remember, for those of us who live up in the North, that we have to stop fertilizing the garden now, but do keep up on the watering and weeding; yes the weeding as you look forward to winter or colder months when you do not have to weed.

Now is a great time to divide Peonies and Iris's; to get the last of the vegetable crops in such as Lettuce, Cabbage and Spinach. We also have to keep an eye on the weather for frost, oh I know frost, oh gosh then we still want the beauty of the flowers to have their last hurrah before they die back and we have to pull them out.

But if decide to not dead head Rudbeckia, Echinacea, Sedum, Astilbe and any other plants that have strong stems and leave them for the beauty of winter they will look wonderful as you look out and you see these dark stems with their flower heads against a cold, snow covered ground and remember back to the joy those beautiful flowers gave you in summer going into fall. So those are just a few garden points for September.
