Fall Gardening
~ By Aletha ~
Okay if we live in an area where we
do not have a long growing season, how can we do fall gardening?
Well it is possible, yes it is.
We pick an area that does not get too much direct sun as this will
dry the soil out on the hottest days in August. So what we need to
do is till the area and we want to add compost to that area; next
we are going to choose plants that have a short growing season
like carrots, peas, beets and broccoli.
So now we have seed packs and we have to look at the back them to
find out what is needed for full growth and then we need to add 2
weeks (yes 2 weeks) to that because of the shortened days and then
we count back from our frost date in your area.
You are saying "I have them in the garden now hello" well these
are great vegetables that are good to can or freeze and have them
all winter long. Just think you pull out a package or open a jar
and you are making a savory winter dish and you know you grew them
in your own garden without having to buy them at the grocers and
all of these taste wonderfully fresh.
Just think at Thanksgiving or Christmas or oh come February when
the snow is flying or it is cold and raining out you made a pot of
soup or stew and used your vegetables from your fall garden. So
now is the time to plan to get this fall garden growing and I do
hope that you will try this and enjoy!
