Gardening In July
~ By Aletha ~
Oh my, it is July already and we are
probably not thinking ahead to fall but we should be, if we want to
start some fall planting now is the time to get some seeds ready.
For Asters, Chrysanthemums, Pansies and ornamental Kale you can find
seeds to start them indoors now so they will be ready to transplant
in September.
Also one thing to remember is our house plants they need to be fed
full strength this month to keep them healthy. When the weather
gets warm we have the Air Conditioner on, I know I do, well that
takes from our house plants so remember you might have to check the
soil a little more often to make sure it has enough water. July is
also a time that you can divide the house plants as this is a good
month to do that. I know that if you have the room and your house
plants are in the South to southwest windows it really is a good
time to move them to a different location it can get very hot during
the summertime and we do not want to bake our plants.
Remember if you have Dahlias to pinch them and continue to water
them and also dust them or spray them to deter insects. If you want
to pinch the terminal buds now you can. These are on the side
branches that have 3 buds, just pinch the two and keep the center
one. This one will then grow bigger because it will get all the
food to help it grow now that it doesn't have to share.
Another good thing to do now is to wash all statues you have
outside to keep them looking bright and pretty or if you want go
buy a new one for the yard. We always think of spring to do that
when they are usually higher in price but come warm weather do we
think to buy a small one to put on the patio or a walk way when
prices are lower? Now would be a good time to go shopping!
Please do not forget to leave water out for the animals
they do need it in the hot months.
July is a pretty month to enjoy with all the flowers in bloom and
for all that it gives us.
