June Gardening
~ By Aletha ~
Well we are into June and we should
have some of our planting done. Our Strawberry season is here in
June and boy I sure do love those strawberries, yummy! If you do
not have Strawberries in your garden that is fine, the farmers
market in your area I am sure will have loads of them. My husband
and I went to two French markets on Saturday and I was able to get
some plants for my garden. I bought 3 Melrose Pepper Plants and had
a hard time this year getting them but where we got them (they are
organic) the lady only had 3 left and I took them and I also bought
some more heirloom Tomatoes to add to the garden.
With the growing season really doing good do not forget the lawn,
yes in June do fertilize your lawn before the very hot weather comes
along and I do hope everyone is mowing the lawn higher to give it
strength and allow the roots to grow deeper. I mow my grass at 4"
in the late spring to summer into early fall; I may have to mow
twice a week when it is the raining season but it also helps choke
out the weeds.
In June we have to watch for aphids on Roses, Shrubs and yes Trees.
I get the garden hose out and spray with a hard spray of water to
get rid of them and sometimes I might have to use soap. I will
take some dish soap either Joy or Dove something mild and I have
even used Baby Shampoo and fill a bottle with water, add a drop
or two and shake and spray on my roses, it will not hurt the
roses but will kill the aphids.
Also make sure you save your newspapers and lay them down in
between your plants and then you can add mulch on top of that or
even grass clippings. You need about 15 pages around your area to
help keep the weeds out and yes it does work.
Now is when we want to prune our Spring Bushes such as Lilacs and
Bridal wreaths after they finish blooming, especially if we want
them to have a lot of blooms coming next year, remember to cut
the older branches down to the ground, or part way down.
Well these are some of the things you can do in June so let us
know what you have done in your garden so far and if you want
to send Pictures we sure do love to look at them.
