Bulbs for Spring Planting

~ By Sassy E. ~

When you see flowers peeking thru the ground in the spring, you know Mother Nature is beginning to show off another beautiful season.

When planting spring bulb's I always plant them in the fall, for them to arrive as beauties in the spring, as some bulbs requrie a period of cold dormancy to rebloom. In all diffrent delightful colores, such as tulips and crocuses, some times placing them in the frig for several days will do the same thing.

I have found that planting bulb's for flowers that don't need a lot of maintance to be great for a beginner starting their first bulb garden. Bulb's are easy to use as they will grow in any soil that is well drained and located where the sun can shine down on them, coming back from year to year with very little effort on our part. To mention a few of the spring flowers there is Tulips, Crocuses, Hyacinths, Snowflakes, Scilla, Snowdrops, Grape Hyacinths and Alliums. They can be planted in containers, window boxes and planters.

Bulb's come in all sizes, some are the size of your fist and others can be as small as your finger nail. Also when you choose your spring bulbs make sure they have no mildew or soft spots on the them. Bulbs that are in this condition will not grow, they will only just rot in the soil and you have nothing. So check and make sure your bulbs are solid and healthy before buying them. You may think a cheaper, on sale bag of bulbs will be okay, but check and make sure before getting them, there may be a reason for the sale.

Most bulbs have directions on the bag on how to plant them. A good rule to keep in mind is to always plant the bulb three times as deep as it will be tall. Also know that the bigger the bulb the larger the bloom will be on your coming flower. In order to enjoy your plants longer plant them so they will bloom at different times, for instance plant for early spring as well as mid and late spring.

For a more colorful show of your plants, they can be planted in large drift's or large winding patterns. Clusters of five to seven bulbs can be placed togather at corners of your house, or other buildings to complement the surroundings. In placing these bulbs always make sure you have selected colors that will blend or provide a pleasing contrast. This will help paint the mood your trying to achieve. Soft pastel colors evoke a calm feeling, while hot reds and yellows jump forward and give a area a much bolder look. Plant pansey's and violas over the bulb bed. In the spring, the bulbs will emerage thru the flowers.
