Chocolate Mint
~ By Diane ~
Mint is an invasive rampant growing plant
In Illinois where I live. It's also a perennial Herb that prefers rich
soil with full sun. You can just trim back with a scissors and it will
re-grow. To keep it from becoming a rapid grower and invading your other
plants in your garden, plant it in a bottomless nursery pot that is at
least 10 inches tall. That will keep the aggressive underground stems
from overwhelming the other plants in your garden.
I am going to try this in spring. I like mint but didn't want it to
crowd out the other plants. There are several varieties of mint besides
the traditional varieties of Spearmint and Peppermint but two that
surprised me was Chocolate mint and sweet Lemon mint. I have Chocolate
Mint tea, one of my favorites, not realizing that their was an actual
plant called Chocolate mint which is a hybrid mint plant, that tastes
and especially smells like a combination of mint and chocolate.
Mint will unfortunately attract hornets and the only way to totally
get rid of mint is to dig and dig deep. Your best bet is to grow it in
pots to keep it from getting unruly. I will be hunting the Nursery for
Chocolate Mint to grow.
