Suicide Prevention Month
Presented by:- Julie
Signs a person may be contemplating suicide.
Talking about suicide or making a plan
Wanting to die or being preoccupied
Giving away possessions
Signs of depression, such as moodiness, hopelessness, withdrawal
Increased alcohol and/or other drug use
Hinting at not being around in the future or saying good-bye
If they are very troubled by a recent death of a friend or
family member or a recent breakup with a girlfriend/boyfriend
or arguments with parents and hearing about other teens who
have committed suicide, they should be watched closely if they
are showing the negative signs.
If a friend is contemplating it you can be there to suggest
you both go to a school counsellor. It's also ok to directly
ask the question "Are you wanting to die?" Tell them you will
go with them to get help from
School counselor, teacher or coach
Crisis telephone hotline [local or 1-800-273-TALK (8255)]
Private therapist or counselor
Mental health agency
Hospital emergency room
Clergy or religious leader
This information applies to parents who can see the telltale signs.
Many young people want to end their lives due to peer group pressure
from not wanting to join in with drugs/alcohol
Males are much less likely to seek help, to talk about feelings of doubt,
depression and anxiety
Native American youth have the highest rates of suicide among ethnic groups.
Undiagnosed and untreated mental illness (i.e., depression, bipolar illness and
schizophrenia) are at higher risk of suicide.
Teens who self-harm are trying to feel better,
while a teen who attempts suicide is trying to end all feelings
Again suggest a counsellor
Removing guns and keeping strong prescription medication under lock and key
Talking to other parents on whether they keep guns. It is illegal to keep
a gun in Australia
Many suicides are impulsive
Suicides often occur during temporary life crises
Most people who attempt suicide do not go on to die by suicide
