Skin Cancer Awareness
(Julie)
People are also at risk if they attend Solariums because
the solaria emits ultra-violet radiation as well which
not many people are aware of.
The sun is higher in the sky in the middle of the day.
In Australia, the highest levels of UVR are between 10am
and 2pm (11am and 3pm daylight saving time). It would
be wise to stay out of the sun at this time of day.
Light or thin cloud cover does not reduce UVR and may even
increase the levels due to scattering.
UVR levels are higher closer to the equator i.e in northern
areas of Australia.
Snow reflects as much as 80% of UVR.
In Australia we have a slogan Slip, Slop, Slap.
Slip on the protective head gear i.e hats, sunglasses,
long shirts, slap on the protective SPF30+ broad spectrum
water resistant sunscreen.
Seek shade.
Anyone in Australia can develop skin cancer but risk is increased for people who
are exposed to ultraviolet radiation (UVR) during childhood and adolescence
have repeated exposure to UVR over their lifetime,
have episodes of severe sunburn, have a light complexion, skin that burns
easily, freckles and doesn’t tan) are older, have a had a previous non-melanoma
skin cancer, have a personal or family history of melanoma,
have a large number of moles have unusual types of moles
are immunosuppressed (including organ transplant recipients)
It doesn't matter whether or not your skin burns, even people with
tanned skin can get skin cancer if they don't protect their skin.
People of all ages need to regularly check their skin for changes.
I have known a 75 year old man who has melanomas all over his body
and his doctor has told him there is no more skin to graft over a
previous skin cancer site.
