Autism
(Betty)
Autism is usually diagnosed in early childhood before during the age of 3 and it effects the child from communcating and interacting with others.
No one knows what causes autism and there are different degrees of this disorder. There are no cures for it at the moment. There are treatments and medicines that can help some if started early.
Types of treatment are behavioral, speech, and physical therapys, along with medicines. There are no medicines that are specially for autism, but there are some that can treat some of the symptoms.
Some of the symptoms are, not hearing you, does not want to be held, wants to be alone, does not look you in the eye when you are talking, has speech problems, cannot stand change of anykind, maybe sensitive to light, but not feel pain.
With the less severe cases and with the right treatment some children can grow up and lead a somewhat normal life.
Some children are very slow to learn and others learn quickly. There are some that are know to be savants, they can be experts on a subject, such as music and other things.
We are still learning more about this everyday. It seems to happen more to boys than girls. It effects all different people all over the world.
Autism is not easily diagnosed. Sometimes it takes going to more than one Doctor to find out if your child has it.
