CROCHET THREAD ANGEL
submitted by: Jus Kuntree

Like many things, the first time is the hardest. Once you've made one of these angels, the next one is so much easier. After a couple of them, you can actually put one together fairly quick.

Need for each angel:

1 each - 1" styrofoam ball
1 each - 3 1/2" string of beads (these are the tiny ones)
23" of 3" double edge lace (skirt looks better if one edge is straight)
crochet thread - size 10
piece of cardboard 6" wide for body
piece of cardboard 3 1/2" wide for arms
3/4" miniature roses, color of choice
approximately 12" of 1/8" ribbon, color of choice
(can put other objects in their hands as well)

Wings:

Cut piece of lace 10" for wings. Fold and overlap to make a width of 4 1/2". Using a large needle, with crochet thread, gather thru middle and then wrap around an tie so the width is approximately 1/2".

Skirt:

With a 14" piece of lace, using the large needle, run a thread through the straight edge to form gathers. You can dab a little glue on the wings and skirt, then sprinkle with glitter, or use a glitter/glue spray.

On the 6" piece of cardboard, wrap the crochet thread 175 times. Tie tight at one end with a piece of crochet thread. You can thread a needle with the crochet thread to get under the wrap easier, or you can lay a piece of crochet thread in the end of the cardboard before you start wrapping, then wrap over it. It's best if you try to keep the wraps as close together as possible, and not spread out too much.
After the end is tied, slip the wraps off the cardboard, and cut through the threads on the end opposite of where you have tied them.

On the 3 1/2" piece of cardboard, wrap crochet thread 50 times. This needs to be tied in the MIDDLE, around ALL the threads. No ends are cut on this one.

Place the 6" wrap where it was tied (with knot underneath), on the foam ball. Cut a small flat spot in the ball where the knot will go. Hot glue under the knot only. After the glue sets, drape thread over ball evenly, and wrap a thread around at the bottom of the ball to form the neck. What works good to help smooth the threads out, is to use a plastic toothed hair pick to comb
them out.

Divide the threads with a little less than half in one part, the lesser forming the back. Sandwich the arms in the divided part and tie to form the waist.
*See note below at bottom.
Tie on the skirt with the edges at the back. Hot glue to close and hold it.

Arms - Lightly twist the arms toward the chest and tie 3/8" from the end to form the hands. ( A tip for tying hands: slip one prong of a hair pick through the end, being sure you catch all the loops, and tie up tight against that. This is the most awkward part of making the angels that I've found, and using the pick helps.) Spot glue rose with 1/8" ribbon on breast, cross over hands and glue.

Make a circle with the beads and carefully glue ontope of the head for the halo.

*To hang, glue a piece of thread at wing area to form a loop. This needs to be done BEFORE gluing on the skirt and wings.
